Charcoal Kilns
Located in the upper reaches of Wildrose Canyon, these kilns were once used to make charcoal for a silver and lead smelting operation in the area. Built in the 1870's, the kilns were only in operation for about 3 years. To make the charcoal, each kiln was first packed with pinon pine logs, which were then ignited and then left to burn for 6 to 8 days. After the burning process was completed, the kiln and charcoal was left to coal for 5 days and then the charcoal was loaded onto horse drawn wagons and transported to the smelters.
