This abandoned steam powered hoist was used by the Island Mining Company between the years of 1873 and 1875. During this time period, the company excavated 3 separate mine shafts reaching depths of up to 200 feet. Ultimately the mining operation was closed due to difficult access, low yield, and a falling price for copper.
